St Nicholas was born in the late 3rd century and was already serving as a priest when St Constantine became emperor of the western Byzantine Empire in 306, legalized Christianity in 313, and united the empire in 324. The next year, St Nicholas, now a bishop, participated in the Council of Nicaea.
St Nicholas performed many miracles during his life and continues to work wonders for travelers and sailors and everyone to this day. This is part of the reason why Nicholas is still such a popular name throughout the Christian world.
When Nicholas was bishop of Myra, there was a terrible famine in his region. The people were suffering and despairing. The good bishop, Nicholas, prayed fervently for God to help deliver his people from starvation. In answer to his prayer, it was revealed to him that there was a ship full of wheat headed for the Roman provinces of Gaul (today’s France). The captain of the ship had a dream in which the saintly bishop appeared to him and said, Please bring the wheat to Myra. Here are three gold coins as a down payment; you will receive ample payment when the wheat arrives in our port. When the captain awoke, he found three gold coins in his hand. He explained the dream and the three coins to his crew, and they changed their course for Myra. When they delivered the wheat to Nicholas, the captain made a profit on the wheat and the people were saved from starvation.
St Nicholas is a ready intercessor for travelers by land, sea, or air—remember his great love as a shepherd and boldly ask him for the miracle you need as you embark on your holiday journeys.
